Mustang Brakes - a Quick Review

So there are millions of Mustangs on the road, right? And of those millions, only a few thousand have acceptable Mustang brake systems from the factory. These are big, V8, rear wheel drive cars made of real metal and have real wheels and tires. Unlike its smaller foreign rivals, the Mustang has always used a tire large enough to handle the torque of the V8 and soak up the rough spots in the road. When you have a large, powerful car with big tires and wheels, you need performance Mustang Brakes.

The stock Mustang Brake systems were adequate for normal driving and if you get a little spirited they would handle it. However, if you enjoy driving your car the way it is supposed to be driven then upgrades are a necessity. A good set of Mustang Brake pads and vented rotors do help greatly and will make an immediate improvement over stock. Some of us are a little more "spirited" than others. And for those of us who live on the edge of insanity and are able to push our cars that extra 10%, pads and rotors are not enough. We need truly improved Mustang Brakes that can provide more stopping power and dissipate heat over extended hard driving occasions (for some more often than for others).

While there are many Mustang Brake System manufacturers who have designed great products for our cars, the two that are the most well known and used are Baer Brakes and Brembo Brakes. Many of you may know that the factory GT500 cars from 2007-2011 came equipped with the Brembos for the increased tire size and extra weight of the iron block(aluminum in '11) 5.4 liter with the roots type charger sitting on it. These systems will help your track times, increase safety during hard driving and can also lessen the un-sprung weight by utilizing lighter aluminum components than the cheaper stock iron and steel pieces.

When upgrading Your Mustang Brakes you want to make sure that your master cylinder and brake lines are up to the task. Most aftermarket systems will use more than one piston in each caliper to better distribute the load on the rotor for a smoother and more consistent brake feel. When using bigger calipers with multiple pistons, your brake system will be required to move more brake fluid than stock. This generally means it will require a larger capacity master cylinder better suited for the system. Many kits come with this, while others leave it as an option for you to choose.

Since Mustang Rear Brakes are designed more for stabilization during braking than they are for actual stopping power, a stock caliper will suffice just fine with an upgraded slotted rotor and good set of brake pads. Once you decide that you want to upgrade your Mustang Brake system, there is one more important aspect to think about: wheel clearance. A larger rotor and caliper will mean you may need a wheel with provisions for such an upgraded braking system. There are hundreds of wheels designed for Mustangs, but not as many are designed to work with massive brakes. Wheels such as the FR500 and GT4 wheels will work on almost any system, while wheels such as the 5 star Saleen style and Bullitt replica style wheels work with most aftermarket brake systems. Rims with a very large dish generally have less clearance due to the spoke design, but for the 2005 and newer owners, the Foose Nitrous Legend SS wheels are very deep dish wheels that clear nearly any system available. Below are a few examples of the braking systems available and the wheel that fit them best. Once again, thank you for using Cruizin Concepts Motorsports and have a blessed day.

1994-2004 Brembo Mustang 13" Front Brake Kit - There are many wheels that fit this system, but the most popular and one of the lighter wheels we sell are the FR500 wheels.

Brembo Front 14" 6piston Brake Kit 2pc Ford Mustang 94-04 - This is a larger, 6 piston system designed for the serious enthusiast. The best fit is, again, the FR500 wheels.

2005+ Brembo Front 14" 6piston Brake Kit - These are our most popular Mustang Brakes kit we have right now for the 2005-2009 and newer cars. This is a vast improvement over stock and does require a larger wheel. Factory style GT500 rim will work, as do FR500, if you want to keep it 18 . Most customers are however going to 20 rim styles with these Mustang brake sytems as there is a larger choice and more popular styles that clear these massive systems. Most Carroll Shelby rim styles are in 20 sizes and are specifically engineered to clear. Many of our Foose wheels are also manufactured to clear large Mustang Brakes. The Foose Nitrous Legend SS is the most popular, with the Foose Speed coming in a close second.
