Choosing The Right Mustang Exhaust |
A dollar earned these days is a one HARD earned dollar! At Cruizin we understand as mustang enthusiast s ourselves that modifying your mustang is an addiction! However choosing the right components the first time makes expansion later on, a little easier on the wallet. To make it this process simpler the techs at Cruizin have devised a little pre-purchase questionnaire to help you ask yourself, which mustang exhaust components are all around best for my mustang? Here are some of the key questions you should ask yourself before purchasing your Mustang Exhaust:
Some key factors in buying exhaust to consider is noise, functionality, emissions, and ultimately budget. Cruizin can help you get the right power and sound without breaking the bank!
Is this my primary transportation, for commuting to and from work home, etc.?Reason we ask is mainly due to drone or the decibel level of your exhaust. A lot of times customers are very hyped up on having a LOUD exhaust system. At first glance it is very appealing! Why not right? It s a mustang, it should be loud and mean! Why this is all the common thought, in hindsight 6 months down the road, you re driving on the freeway having to blare the radio so loud to cancel out the exhaust at highway speeds can get very annoying. The other side is free flowing exhaust does make power, however some backpressure is needed. Mufflers aren t always a bad thing. There are plenty of quiet mustangs that will pass emissions, equipped with cats , and mufflers that will outrun some of the loudest mustangs out on the road!
What are my future plans for my car? Will I be using forced induction or some type of power adder? Most people have a good idea of how they want to modify their mustang in the beginning, but as we all know, it progressively ALWAYS grows more in depth as time goes on. You wished you had done this and that, so to keep from backtracking you should realistically decide what s its primary use is for. The need for speed is addictive and COSTLY. Dollar per horsepower isn t as commonly talked about as the power to weight ratio formula. Knowing if you re going to sponge for the power adder or not is key factor in deciding which system best suits your application. Typically for forced induction applications you want very free flowing exhaust, were as n/a vehicles, backpressure is more of a requirement to balance the flow. If your vehicle is a track car then GO ALL OUT off road exhaust and squeeze every pony out of the beast you can! Typically our street prowlers need more of a driver friendly noise level, emissions test friendliness and still produce a decent power gain for the DOLLAR!
Long tubes or Shorties?Knowing which header to choose can be made very simple. Making more power with an engine, is simple. Getting the exhaust gasses to exit quickly and easy for the engine the more fuel air mixture it can process, thus making more horsepower, i.e. ve volumetric efficiency. Short tubes are not bad for an engine were its power band is not very broad. If you re making power from 3800 to peak and you don t have a lot of exhaust gasses to exhale, these might be well suited for you. Typically people are worried about restrictive exhaust however having some restrictions strategically placed can speed up exhaust gas flow and increase power on a small engine. Generally people looking for an appearance upgrade and ease of install shorties are typically the top choice for that crowd. For the power increase long tubes are your best bet. Having the collector so far away from the exhaust gas ports helps speed up exhaust gas flow and help pull exhaust rather than push. The exhaust can leave the port with greatly velocity with a longer travel path for exit. On forced induction big tube headers are recommend due to the exhaust volume being somewhat larger. Using big tubes on a small cubic inch whether shorties or long tubes with no power adder with create a lazy flow .most likely not resulting in any gains.
Mustang Exhaust Mid Pipes?Mid pipes are used to equalize the exhaust gas pulses from either side of the engine. Most manufacturers offer Mustang h-pipes and/or Mustang x-pipes. While both offer significant gains over stock depending on application the x is far superior. An X-pipe will force the exhaust gasses to cross between the sides rather than just simply having a single port to equalize pulses from side to side. The scavenging forces of the x-pipe are far stronger and will produce the most bang for buck. The x will literally force and increase velocity of the exhaust gasses and improving overall performance. Acceleration should be improved very well. Drag racers should see better trap speed, lower e.t s and a better 60 foot. You should see an increase in performance across the whole power band with an x-pipe. To add xpipes are offered in the catted and non-catted mid pipes, again this is for emissions purposes or the use of a vehicle in off-road applications such as drag racing and road racing.
Ford Mustang Mufflers and ResonatorsGenerally speaking these components do not produce horsepower. However working in addition to an efficient exhaust system they can be less parasitic than just swapping mufflers with stock exhaust. EFFECIENCY EQUALS HORSEPOWER!!!! Your engine is an air pump, getting air in and out efficiently makes power. Mufflers are used to quiet down the exhaust system and create some backpressure. Resonators also have no affect on power, yes they are less restrictive, but mainly used for increasing or decreasing the exhaust volume. There are brands of mufflers that will outperform some more than others, but all mufflers are restrictive in some way.
