Due to wheels being in constant contact with the ground, being next to brake pads, and contaminants from the road, wheels should be cleaned more often than the car it's self. If you go too long with out cleaning your wheels, they can get build up on them from brake dust and other contaminants which can cause issues with your wheels finish. How often your wheels should be cleaned has many factors such as how much it is driven, where it is driven (dirt, gravel, pavement, etc.), and how they are cared for (polish,wax, protectand, etc.), so basically it could be once a month to twice a week.
